We get to share it

A Kalapos sosem aludt.
A Kalapos magáról mesélt.

She was collecting the waking up faces. Those first regards, when the brain is trying to process what the eyes see; the confused wrinkles of  “where am I?” and “what day is it?”.
Being a ticket controller, it wasn’t too complicated; she had to wake up lots of people every day; most of the time a louder “Good morning” was enough, but sometimes she needed some careful poking, possibly a friendly nudge.
She couldn’t get bored with the waking faces. Some looked frightened and lost; others would stretch like a cat before they handed over their tickets. Once a lady in a purple coat thanked her, as if she had asked for a wake up call. Some were embarrassed and said sorry; once a girl just mumbled “not yet pleeeease”.
Hat Man would never sleep. Most of the time he chose his seat so the sun could reach his face and would just enjoy the warmth of the rays with his eyes closed – the chilly wind couldn’t come through the double windows. His ticket was always prepared on the side, and he always accompanied his “Glad to see you, Miss” with a genuine smile.
Once they were waiting for a connecting train. Hat Man would talk about himself.
You know, I travel a lot, I have time to observe people. I make up stories about them: the lady in the purple coat gives violin lessons, and her parrot screams if the student hits the wrong notes. The boy with the curly hair is studying to be a baker; his dream is to make potato bread like his grandfather did. The girl in the red skirt, her sweetheart always lets her sleep five more minutes in the morning, that’s why she was begging you.”
She burst out laughing; she wondered about the life of the travelers too.
Hat Man was still talking.
But, you know, sometimes I get really scared. I make up all kind of things about them, but I don’t even know their names. I dress them up with stories, pasts, lives, and I don’t really know why. Do I wish to know them? Do I wish I didn’t have to spend all this time with a bunch of strangers? Do I wish we had something in common?
She listened to him understandingly. All those questions have crossed her mind too. Then she said to Hat Man:
I think we do have something in common. These two hours and forty minutes. Here we are strangers together.

Taking a guess when the only answer is yes

Dear Sir,

It came to my knowledge recently that the position My Girl (job reference: Number 1) in your Missing Piece Department may become a permanent one.

I have been filling in for the position for a considerable amount of time now, but my understanding was that it would only be a definite duration contract. Now that it becomes a life-long assignment, I would like to apply for it.

I believe I am in possession of the essential qualifications to satisfactorily perform the required duties. However, at the time of my first assignment, I wasn’t entirely convinced that I have the dedication to take up responsibilities for decades.

I also dare to say that I know that you had your doubts too. Although you greeted me on my first day saying “
I think we are a good match” and months later you introduced me to your Fun Controller Committee as “the most surprisingly suitable incumbent ever”, it was never a secret between us that my unbalanced level of commitment and your unclear expectations create a permanent challenge in our relationship.

I understand that you were reluctant to make said position a permanent one because you couldn’t clearly see its future place in your organisation. I consider it as my personal achievement that, according to the newly published post description, the incumbent is expected to become Associated Partner, Chief of the Happiness Division.

I believe that I am ready for this challenge. The success of our cooperation made me realise that there are areas related to my current tasks I never thought of discovering, but now I am ready for more responsibility. I am even willing to agree to an eventual addition of newcomers to our team. I believe that you already know I am the best candidate for this position, but should you have any doubts, Sir, please consider that, in addition to the above, I have no problems with my current remuneration.

Take these lies and make them true

You admired him for walking so purposefully, barefoot through strawberry fields; you never imagined how lost he felt.
You envied him for the freedom of spreading his wings and flying away; when the only thing he longed for was something to keep him on the ground.
You thought his unpredictable ways influenced his environment; his greatest fear has always been that he doesn’t make a difference.
You thought he’d leave an unfillable gap once he moves away; he feared nobody would notice his absence.
You thought he is so passionate about life; he was just afraid he wouldn’t have enough time to live it all, that’s why he rushed, moved, left constantly.
You thought he left you because he didn’t care, because he needed a new thrill at some new place.
Maybe he needs to discover new places to finally find one where he can stay, one he doesn’t want to leave? Those wings can be heavy.

Nehezek tudnak azok a szárnyak lenni.

Leave them kids alone

A „mindannyian mások vagyunk” dogmára épített világom kicsit megingott.

****************************************************************************************

Mum always told me that growing up for her meant that she finally learnt, not everybody is like her. I honestly don’t understand how she could not see that – for me it was pretty obvious since forever that people are quite different, helloooo. Well, maybe growing up with Mom and Dad, surrounded by their at least looney friends, where everyone is just so very DIFFERENT, I didn’t really have a chance to think I’m like the others. Or that the others are like me.

Until that sweet October afternoon in the park, when were discussing how each one of us ended up here. We were carefully avoiding the „how long are we staying” and the „what’s gonna happen after” subjects, we decided long ago that we can worry about the future when it arrives. And then it’s present anyway. So we were sitting there on top of the old ramparts, looking down the city, when Leila said, on her „thinking out loud, don’t mind me” voice:

- Mom was going bonkers about me coming here to study, all I heard was how romantic that is, and Auberge espanol.

I was staring at her as if I’d never seen her before. I was listening to the same for months back home, and even though on better days I found the idea romantic myself, I never told anybody about it – I was sure that those pink commonplaces can only pop out of my peace and love mother’s head.

My world, built on the “we are all oh so different” dogma got a bit shaken. So how is it in reality? Are we similar in our slightly tacky clichés? Are we sooo different we’re almost alike? Does our belief in being diverse make us alike? And if one day I understand all these, would that mean I’ve grown up?

This ain't a love song

No, I don’t miss you. I don’t miss how you are unable to spell correctly the simplest words but can carry out the most fascinating conversation about pretty much anything in life. I don’t miss how you are grumpier than me in the morning, and I don’t miss the way your shirt becomes wrinkly by the end of the day.

No, I don’t miss you in situations where you used to be present. I don’t miss you when I hysterically laugh over horribly translated French; I don’t miss you when I get lost in a book store and euphorically pull out one beauty after the other: “Look! They have this! And this! And and and…” only to realize you are not there anymore. I don’t miss you when I look at my Lego boat, lonely on the shelf because nobody plays with it and discusses government-less Belgium meanwhile. And no, I don’t miss you when the silly red sunglasses show up somewhere in the house (I’ve been trying to lose them but they keep coming back). Yes, the red sunglasses we bought at the market in Malaga. What a loony idea, you don’t even wear sunglasses. And I barely wear red. Although it looks good on me. No, I don’t miss that crazy afternoon either, when you wanted me to pose like a cruel ice queen and made hundreds of photos of me. I don’t miss you when I go to the forest to feel the trees’ smell; I don’t miss you when I come home and want to tell you that I’ve seen the Prime Minister climbing over a fence.

I don’t miss you in situations I’ve always wanted to share with you either. I don’t miss you when I bake something new and need inspiration (and a grateful audience). I didn’t miss you when I decided to go back to school and was both nervous and excited about it. I don’t miss you when I travel to a new place, nor when my skin feels salty from the sea; I don’t miss you in the charming North, nor in the sunny South. I don’t miss you here in the middle either. I don’t miss you at the rare moments when I suddenly feel I understand a little more of this world, and I don’t miss you when we miserably lose the pub quiz yet again.

I don’t miss you over my morning coffee; I don’t miss you when I count back the minutes till lunch. I don’t miss you when I watch the evening news with my hot chocolate either.

By the way, I bought a red hat. To go with the sunglasses.

Azokból a pillanatokból sem hiányzol, amelyeket mindig szerettem volna megosztani veled.

Donc on y va.

- A játszótérre mentek? Hogyhogy?
Úgyhogy most odamegyünk.
Fernando, fegyverbe! Meghódítjuk a hét tengert!

Teljesen megbolondult ott a játszótéren.
Most nagyon csöndesnek tűnik.

He's like the wind

I’ve always been banned from musicians. I had this blacklist inherited from friends, and musicians or actually any kind of artists figured there together with lawyers, journalists, curly-haired, blue-eyed, left-handed men, twins, historians or athletes. I know, it’s funny, because I always had a thing for twins and found the left-handed different in a way that would attract me. Let alone the deep admiration I immediately felt towards anybody who could do something I had no clue about.

So one day this guy showed up, with his messy curls and a twin sister. And his music that made me remember all the things in the world I always wanted to experience but almost forgot about.

I tried really hard not to fall, not this time, not for this guy. I miserably failed, of course.

From the first moment, I tried to convince myself he was way too up on his high horse for me. This theory lasted for about 7 minutes into the first conversation; then I had to admit there was no horse whatsoever. Not that he was very much down to Earth, no. He was in the clouds most of the time, or maybe even in space, seeing the world underneath through his own looking lens. But he wasn’t pretending.

Then I tried listing all the reasons why I’m not made for putting up with someone of his kind. That “they” only have their own field of interest in their mind, that after I’d overcome my admiration, there wouldn’t be much left to see; that there wouldn’t be anything to talk about; that we’d share no common interest; that everyday life would be just a lot of trouble with somebody who makes their living by being an Aaaartist. And most of all, that his taste is beyond average in everything – how am I supposed to drag him to the movies without feeling ashamed for watching a blockbuster?

Again, I was wrong. Music was just his way of expressing his thoughts about anything he was interested in, and he was interested in so many things! He could easily spend hours discussing how the French football team could get out of that trouble they got themselves into at the World Cup; then continue on with his opinions about Clint Eastwood as an actor and as a director; how he sometimes felt sorry for the wives of all the eurocrats, and how he envied them on other days; or how he would teach his future children about the consequences of their acts.

When it came to everyday life, he cooked like some local Jamie Oliver, only with a smaller mess. As for entertainment for the masses: not only would he go to the movies on a Saturday to laugh about the bad plot in the middle of the crowded room, but he would insist we go to the amusement park afterwards, because he felt like going on the rollercoaster.

Being with him felt like being in a shooting of a cartoon movie – colours, lights, sparks all over the place. Never a minute of boredom. It was a constant May Day, with cotton candy. One day he even got me a bouquet of colourful balloons instead of flowers.

That’s when I started worrying.

I was afraid of the day when the shine wears off. I thought he liked the novelty of being with someone who shares his enthusiasm for Sunday ice cream and is willing to wear a colourful feathered hat for that; and I feared the day when it stops being a novelty and therefore stops being enough. I was worried that the playful everydays we had would start tiring him; that once he’d learnt everything about me there won’t be anything more for him to discover. I’m big on self-doubting, on days of darks thoughts I would think he’s so out of my league that Patrick Swayze could sing his tacky “just a fool to believe I have anything (s)he needs” song on my behalf. I just wasn’t sure if I was interesting enough. Especially not whether I could keep being interesting. I could never get the old stereotype about artists out of my mind, and I knew I was no muse.

After the balloon thing I spent weeks in a strange daze, wondering around in life, waiting for something to happen, or, more accurately, waiting for something to stop happening.

And then one day, he was sitting at his piano in his orange T-shirt. His face was all wrinkly from sleep, his hair just the usual mess. His fingers were walking up and down on the keys, as if they were mumbling a melody. He was mumbling too. “Music comes to me easier when you’re around. You inspire me.

There. He said it. Inspiration. Me. For him.

While I was searching for my words, I thought, with all due respect, Patrick Swayze can stop singing on my behalf.”

**********************************************************************************

„A zenészek mindig a bölcs barátnőktől örökölt tiltólistámon voltak, a jogászokkal, firkászokkal, göndör hajú, kékszemű, balkezes férfiakkal, ikrekkel, történészekkel és sportolókkal együtt.

Mindig féltem a naptól, amikor megszűnik a varázs.

Egyik reggel a zongoránál ült a narancssárga pólójában, összegyűrt arccal, szalmakazallal a fején. Ihletet adsz.

Tessék. Elhangzott. Ihlet. Én. Neki.
Egy darabig nem jutottam szóhoz. Arra gondoltam, minden tiszteletem Patrick Swayze-é, de mégse énekeljen a nevemben.”
